Anyone ever seen or heard an A1 or A1X system with 3 515's per box like this:

How rare are they? Wonder if any have survived over the years....

Got another photo around here somewhere that shows an A1 or A1X system as having 3
210 cabinets bolted together - not as two cabinets with 3 woofers each.

Looking at that picture and then at my own Altec system, it would seem that I am vastly under woofered. I have a 1005 with a single 288 but only a lonly 515B to back it up.

Under-woofered??? I had eight 515's in four 210's and it still seemed under-woofered. Mid-bass projection was awesome, but a little lacking down low.

As far as I know, Altec only made the three woofer box for a short period at the beginning of VOTT production. After that they used the two woofer box in combinations of three in the largest installations. Not sure why- maybe the smaller boxes were easier to manufacture and ship, or were stiffer and performed better.

The performance of the 515 depends greatly on how it is loaded. The front horn of the VOTT enclosures is a rapid flare that only loads down to 150Hz. or so; below that the box functions as a bass reflex, with lower efficiency. This design was perfect for the intended use at the time.

I have built front horn loaded subwoofers with a 15Hz. exponential flare and 19' path. A single 515-16G can rattle my whole house at 20Hz. on a couple of watts of power when loaded this way.

Theres a company called Core Systems that will build huge front loaded horns to order, and they range in size, according to how deep you want to get!

They were featuring a WALK IN sized front loaded horn for two fifteens, they claimed usable response to 20hz!

I mean the picture had people standing inside the flare of the horn! REALLY BIG! You need REALLY big rooms for stuff like this, and they are mucho expensive!

But if you want it, theres someone that makes it!
